Undergraduate Teaching Opportunities Program (UTOP)
The Undergraduate Teaching Opportunities Program (UTOP) offers you an exciting chance to gain hands-on experience in teaching and instruction. Through UTOP, you will engage in impactful projects designed to develop essential skills and knowledge that will benefit your future career. You will have the opportunity to conduct tutorials and workshops for your fellow HKUST students, deliver engaging lessons to primary and secondary school students, and organize workshops for specific groups within non-governmental organizations (NGOs). You can choose subjects that align with your major or venture into topics outside your discipline. This program will be a fantastic way for you to build your teaching experience and enhance your competencies!
Program Structure
You will start with training workshops that lay the groundwork for your teaching practice. These sessions include at least four contact hours and cover essential topics such as developing teaching plans, classroom management, active learning strategies, and effectively using classroom technology.
You will engage in teaching activities that make up at least 25% of the course's academic components. This hands-on experience is crucial for applying what you have learned. You will work in groups to teach at least two classes, accumulating a minimum of three hours of actual teaching experience. The exact number of classes may vary based on agreements between your instructors and partner institutions.
At the end of the course, you will present your teaching activities. You can choose to conduct an oral presentation at a mini-conference, create a poster presentation, or use another format as approved.
